Water was applied to extinguish the smoldering areas and they removed debris from the room. July 29, MFMD and Tempe Fire Department units responded to a bedroom fire in the 2200 block of West Dora Street. Units found a mattress in a boy bedroom and the occupant had used a dry powder extinguisher to put out a fire. Crew extinguished the smoldering mattress and removed it from the interior. There was no extension of the fire to the structure. July 29, MFMD and Tempe, Gilbert and Chandler units responded to structure fire in the 3000 block of South Santa Barbara Circle. They discovered the fire in the backyard had spread to the corner of the house. Crews pulled a fire hose line to the back yard to extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished with no extension into the interior of the house. Smoke was removed. July 31, MFMD, Gilbert and Chandler officials responded to a technical rescue call in the Roosevelt Water District canal at the 6800 block of East Elliot Road. Units found a pickup truck with its lights still on in the canal with just the top of the cab showing. A plan was established for a technical rescue team swimmer to enter the water and check the interior of the truck. One firefighter was overheated, treated at the scene in rehab and remained with his crew. Property was secured with a fence and a fire watch was posted by MFMD. The cause was listed as possibly the heating/cooling unit. There was a building value of $130,000 with a $130,000 loss, and contents were listed as $50,000 with a loss of $40,000. Aug. 4, MFMD responded to a vehicle fire in the 2100 block of West Broadway Road. MFMD units found a 2004 Ford Mustang with a fire in the engine area, made a direct attack and extinguished it.
